With over 10 years having passed since the Frozen Throne and no word on whether we'll ever be seeing another Warcraft RTS, a very dedicated modder has taken matters into his own hands. Steven Luo has recreated quite a bit of Warcraft in his latest Starcraft 2 mod, Warcraft RTS: Alliance and Horde or WAH for short.
“The powerful SC2 Editor came out, [so] that one can create delicate games by just using it,” he writes. “Blizzard seems to say, ‘Wanna Warcraft IV? Help yourself!’. So I did it.”
The mod is now in its 1.0 stage and is far from just another map for SC2, it has its own textures, sounds and models - so let's see it in action:
This isn't the first time Steven has dabbled with mods, it all started with WoW's beta:
“The idea came from ten years ago, when WoW came to beta. For I did not have any account, and did not like just watching others playing, I decided to use the Warcraft III editor to create my WoW, and did it for three months.”
"Since Warcraft IV is far away from me, just like WoW was ten years ago, why not use [the] Starcraft II Editor to create one?,” he writes. “This time, I have eight years of coding and design experience - and more importantly, a stronger will.”
He's been working on the mod since March, but recently quit his job in order to bring it up to 1.0 status and this only took him two months! The end results are quite impressive: two factions, three maps, 14 buildings, 16 units, 18 heroes and an AI system for solo skirmishing, and he's not even close to done yet:
“I still have big plans - I want to implement the Burning Legion, once designed to be a main faction in Warcraft III. Even for the current version, there are still much work to be done on bugs, balance issues and improvements. Please do not hesitate to give your suggestions - with all of you, I am not alone.”
